What is Paging in F1AP?

Paging is the F1AP message the gNB-CU sends to the gNB-DU to request radio paging of a UE.

Who sends the Paging message?

The gNB-CU sends F1AP Paging to the gNB-DU over F1-C.

What is the purpose of Paging Identity?

Paging Identity identifies the UE being paged. It can carry a RAN UE paging identity or a CN UE paging identity.

What is Paging DRX used for?

Paging DRX helps determine the UE paging cycle and when the UE should monitor paging occasions.

Does Paging establish an RRC connection?

No. Paging only alerts the UE. RRC Resume or RRC Setup may follow after the UE responds.

How is this different from NGAP Paging?

NGAP Paging runs between AMF and gNB/CU over N2. F1AP Paging runs between gNB-CU and gNB-DU over F1-C.

What happens after paging succeeds?

The UE responds on the radio interface, and the CU may continue with RRC Resume, RRC Setup, Initial UL RRC Message Transfer, or UE context establishment.

How do you troubleshoot paging failures?

Check UE Identity Index Value, Paging Identity, Paging Cell List, DRX/eDRX fields, DU radio paging logs, and the expected UE response.
